Abstract:

The past 10 years, since the publication of Moneyball, have seen an explosion of interest in statistical methods for sports. Since the Joint Statistical Meetings are being held in Montreal, an Original Six city, it seems appropriate to talk about statistical analysis in hockey. In this post-Moneyball era, statistical methods for ice hockey have lagged behind other sports, notably baseball and basketball. While hockey has not been as quick to adapt statistical methods as some other sports, there have been some important contributions to our understanding of this fast-paced game. In this talk, I will survey some of the notable statistical work that has been done in hockey on topics such as pulling the goalie, the shootout, and player aging effects. Special attention will be paid to Les Habitants.
