Abstract:

A solid foundation in statistical theory and methodology is always included in today's statistics curriculum for post-secondary-school students. Non-technical skills (e.g., making oral presentations; constructing well-written documents, usually with well-designed displays; collaborating with a team or a client; taking the lead of a group, etc.) are often not a part of a department's statistical courses. This session will reinforce the importance of training in these abilities for subsequent success in education, business, and government. These success skills may be incorporated within existing courses by introducing reports and presentations. Another approach is to create a stand-alone course, such as a project course, a consulting course, or a quality tools course. Information about the American Statistical Association's one-day Career Success course will be provided. Finally, this session will include ample time for audience participation.
