Abstract:

Maximal length linear feedback shift register sequences (or m-sequences) are certain sequences over a finite field, which are widely used as experimental designs for functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments. However, the statistical optimality of these designs has not been proven via rigorous optimal design theory. Here, we provide sufficient conditions for fMRI designs to be optimal. We also show that an extended version of m-sequences for experiments with one stimulus type is universally optimal and that for studies with two or more stimulus types is D-optimal.
