Abstract:

Little is known about the structure of social networks among LGBT individuals, and among older LGBT adults in particular. Egocentric social network data were collected as part of the Caring and Aging with Pride project that surveyed 2560 LGBT adults age 50 and older with the general aim to better understand physical and mental health as well as respective risk and protective factors in this population. Because name-generating questions were not possible due to the interviewer burden, individuals were asked to report the number of LGBT or straight people that they interact with in a typical month, separately for each sexual orientation subgroup. We estimate network size by the summation method and network diversity by considering existence of links to individuals in other sexual orientation subgroups. The average total network size was 63.2(sd=94.6) and the average network diversity was 3.15(sd=1.1). We examine the relationship between both measures and demographic characteristics including indicators of gender and sexual orientation.
