Abstract:

This presentation will provide contextual and historical background of the US involvement in recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as an introduction to the Topic Session "Why statistical research on the mental health conditions of United States Veterans is a national priority." Available resources and methodology used by the Office of Public Health Post-Deployment Epidemiology Program for understanding health care utilization at VA health care facilities and the health impacts of combat deployments will be described. Data from a population-based health survey will be presented on the injuries and psychological stressors experienced by combat troops and associations with mental health screening results.
