Title: Nonparametric Tolerance Intervals to Evaluate Reliability of Two Respiration Devices with Skewed Data

Abstract:

Two respiration monitoring devices are to be compared on reliability, one is conventional capnometer and the other is novel rainbow acoustic monitor (RAM). A randomized experiment was designed to obtain paired capnometer and RAM functioning data. What is the reasonable approach to quantitatively evaluate their reliabilities in terms of functioning probability? Tolerance interval (TI) is a straightforward solution when the distributions of data meet normal assumption. In this study, normal assumption was severely violated and hence non-parametric approaches were taken. Three approaches were proposed: Normal assumption-based TI with coverage correction, bootstrap TI, and order statistic-based TI. Bootstrap and simulation were utilized to validate the three approaches and recommendations were made based on different coverage and confidence level requirements.
