Abstract:

Federal statistical agencies collect and produce large amounts of data and have mandates to disseminate information to the public while simultaneously protecting the confidentiality of those providing the information. Most federal statistical agencies have developed Disclosure Review Boards (DRBs) comprised of persons with expertise to assess information before it is released publicly. The panel will include members of the DRBs of U.S. federal statistical agencies who will cover key elements such as the principal features of the DRB including objectives, type of data reviewed, organization of the DRB, the decision-making process, and the statistical disclosure methods used. With changes in technology and increasing use of data for data mining, open data, big data initiatives, etc., the role of the DRB becomes increasingly important and complex.
