Abstract:
|
Oglala Lakota College(OLC) has a great difficulty with students being able to attend classes. OLC automatically drops students from courses if they exceed absence limits. However, OLC does allow students to do makeup assignments to change the record to present. OLC's situation is likely extreme even among open enrollment higher education institutions. The peculiarities of OLC are discussed. However, the problems at OLC may exist at other institutions, and the remedies may be similar. The aid for students was screencast lectures that cover and effectively replace a 3 hour class meeting. This required long running videos which required resources beyond simple freeware screencasting software and usual web services. Freeware video editing software, and video conversion software was selected and used. Additionally, a web service that allowed secure long running web videos was selected. Attendance records indicated that these videos allowed students to avoid being dropped from the course. Results from Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters attendance as well as changes in procedures will be presented.
