Abstract:

Sustainability is a key component of today's world. Whether we are talking about a local convenience store or a multinational engine company, methods are being deployed to make organizations more sustainable. Six Sigma, a statistics based process improvement methodology, is a tool applied by organizations to reduce variation in their processes. The statistical nature of Six Sigma makes process improvement a quantitative study garnering potential real savings to organizations. In a Six Sigma course that I taught last year, we applied Six Sigma methodology to campus dining at our institution to reduce food waste. Besides providing a real-world application of the statistical concepts involved in Six Sigma, an even greater benefit of the project was an opportunity to further the sustainability goals of the college. In order to have the tools to produce the various graphics, control charts, and statistical analysis to do the project, we employed Minitab's Quality Companion software. In this talk, I would like to show how this software can be used in academia to power students through process improvement using the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control approach of Six Sigma.
