Abstract:

In recent years, fMRI scanning experiments have become feasible to perform on a larger scale. One aspect of this development is the possibility of longitudinal scans, yielding an opportunity to track individual changes in brain activity. A common problem for most longitudinal studies, including L-fMRI, is loss of participants at follow up. Available ANOVA-based methods for analyzing fMRI data have one major drawback, namely excluding subjects with any missing observations from the analysis. Such analysis has its simplicity, but the approach greatly reduces sample sizes, resulting in loss of power and may bias parameter estimates. To overcome the problem with missing data, imputation methods have been developed and is now a well-established technique. The approaches involve substituting missing items with plausible values given the observed data creating a completed data set, which is to be analyzed using standard procedures. The aim of this study is to adapt imputation methods, and further, to evaluate the different methods in the context of missing longitudinal fMRI data using simulation and by applying them to real data from the Betula study.
