Abstract:

The need to empower non-statisticians with statistical savvy has never been greater. Statisticians use two vehicles to disseminate their expertise: teaching and consulting. Unfortunately, time devoted to teaching can't be spent consulting and vice versa. How can the modern statistician organize these naturally competing priorities in a synergistic way? Properly balancing these and other obligations can be a daunting, often unclear task for early-career statisticians. The purpose of this talk is to share experiences and lessons learned (many the hard way) while balancing teaching and consulting at the intersection of university, research institute, and medical school settings. Topics discussed include pursuit of grant funding, turning short term consultations into long term collaborations, managing student and client expectations, training statistics graduate students to collaborate on your behalf, and involving medical students in research.
