Abstract:
|
Statistics in the community (StatCom) was founded in 2001 at Purdue University with the two main goals 1) providing pro bono statistical consulting to community organizations and 2) engaging students in volunteer statistical opportunities. In recent years the StatCom network has spread to several universities across the world, including Virginia Tech.
This talk will focus on StatCom at Virginia Tech, providing helpful lessons from the experiences of a graduate student soliciting clients, recruiting statistical collaborators, supervising fellow students, and working with clients of a non-statistical nature. Additionally there will be an overview of interesting projects in the arenas of water quality, traffic safety, and the social sciences.
