Abstract:
|
A procedure for dimension reduction in discriminant analysis when the data are functions is presented. The basic idea is to generalize the concept of dimension-reduction subspace, introduced in the finite-dimensional case by Li (1991) and Cook (1998), to the situation in which the observations arise from a stochastic process. In applications, a functional dimension-reduction subspace can be approximated by a properly chosen finite-dimensional linear manifold. Examples of application with real data are analyzed.
