Abstract:
|
While investigating the fraud into Stapel's scientific publications, it became clear that the distinction between questionable research practice (called "sloppy science" by the Stapel investigation committee) and fraud was hard to make. Worse even, if good research practice had been performed, the fraud could have been detected much earlier, and even might have been prevented in some cases! Education in good research practice with the aim of improving the scientific attitude is therefore crucial in prevention of fraud. In this contribution, we will discuss what our findings mean for the education of students and researchers in 'good research practice'. We will propose an education program from bachelor to master students and PhD students, focusing on the consequences of sloppy science in terms of validity and statistical issues.
