Abstract:
|
Populations, which reproduce in a supercritical manner while little, i.e. below the habitat carrying capacity, and subcritically if their size exceeds the carrying capacity, obviously behave like ordinary branching processes initially (provided they start small, say from one mutant). They either die out or they grow exponentially until approaching the carrying capacity, K. There they linger for a time the duration of which is of exponential order in K, as K grows to infinity. Ultimately they die out. During that long persistence time their composition should stabilize, and e.g. a sort of quasi-stable age-distribution appear.
