Title: Muste: Extending R with a Whole Statistical Software Environment

Abstract:

R has become very popular software for statistical computing and data analysis. Many other statistical software packages contain interfaces to R in order to offer extended functionality. We demonstrate a contrasting approach in which the functionality of an integrated environment for statistical computing and related areas (known as Survo developed by professor Seppo Mustonen since the early 1960s) has been fully incorporated into R implementing the whole Survo software in the form of the open source R package Muste. Features of Survo include file-based data operations, flexible data preprosessing and manipulation tools, alternative plotting and printing facilities, a teaching friendly matrix interpreter, so-called editorial arithmetics for instant calculations, a powerful macro language, plenty of statistical modules and an innovative text editor based GUI that allows one to freely mix commands, data and natural text. In addition, Muste contains properties that make the interplay with R seamless. By giving direct access to these additional useful features of Survo for R users, Muste significantly expands the options available for data analysis and teaching within R.
