Title: Modification to the Lineup Protocol
Author(s): Lendie Follett*+
Companies: Iowa State University
Keywords: lineups ; graphics
Abstract:

The existing lineup protocol allows for exactly one response from each lineup; this it too restrictive to be practical. Viewers need to have the option of multiple responses, or none, if they cannot make a decision. Allowing for this flexibility has impacts on the way we draw inference, but preliminary findings have shown that this results in theoretically better properties, such as higher efficiency of the p-value estimates, without introducing any bias. This modification to the lineup protocol will be explored, along with several others including: using the order of plots as a source of level of confidence in the choice, ways of dealing with the small sample of the null distribution, as well as methods of collecting motives for choosing particular plots from a lineup.
