Abstract:

Large automated healthcare databases are commonly used in pharmacoepidemiology studies. These healthcare databases, including claim databases and clinical/medical databases, are designed for other purposes than epidemiology research. Therefore, instead of a consistent sequential medical history, a patient's enrolment and treatment records are often scattered into segmented episodes that involve multiple rows in the data. Combining the segmented information to reconcile a patient's medical history is challenging but absolutely necessary for pharmacoepidemiology studies. We will identify different issues and methods in reconciling eligibility episodes and treatment episodes. Since intensive data manipulation is usually required for medical history reconciliation, programming tips are also discussed in handling different scenarios.
