Title: APL and Data Analysis: Still Friends After All of These Years

Abstract:

More than 50 years after its creation, APL is still a powerful tool for data analysis. The flexibility of the language, its array processing and matrix capabilities, its interpretive nature, and the many statistical functions that have been developed for the language make APL an ideal environment for analyzing data. APL is especially well-suited for the one-time analyses that statisticians so often face, where packaged software may fall short. It's also unmatched for testing and prototying new algorithms. Current implementations provide a wide range of capabilities for graphical display and for developing friendly user interfaces. This talk will demonstrate the power of APL for analyzing data, with the expectation that many in the audience have never seen the language in action.
