A description of the criteria used to write items for the LOCUS assessments, an overview of the item writing process, and illustrations of LOCUS assessment items will be presented. An overview of the different stages of item writing, and the tasks completed at each stage, will be presented. Examples will be given to illustrate the variety of items that were produced, the evolution of an assessment item, how LOCUS items identify misunderstandings and misconceptions as well as correct statistical reasoning and understanding, and the characteristics of open-ended items and grading rubrics.
