Abstract:

An overview of the Levels of Conceptual Understanding in Statistics (LOCUS) assessment project, which is funded by the National Science Foundation (DRL-1118168) will be presented. The goals and purpose of the assessment project will be highlighted, including how the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the GAISE K-12 framework were used to identify important learning outcomes, the developmental nature of the assessments across middle and secondary school grades, and the expected impact of the LOCUS project on the teaching of statistical concepts in K-12. The LOCUS Evidence Model that guided the development of test items for each assessment will be presented. A brief overview of the development of the LOCUS Evidence Model along with example evidence statements that illustrate expected differences in statistical reasoning and understanding at different grade levels will be provided.
