Abstract:

Do online reviews reflect the true quality of products? A recent article publicized that the average rating for top review sites is an astoundingly positive 4.3 out of 5 stars. In this paper, we study the phenomena of review rating trends and convergence and, in particular, the impact of review history on the review ratings. We analyze data obtained from popular restaurant review websites, and present a model for the dynamics of the review ratings we observe, using concepts and tools from the literature on marked point processes.
