Abstract:

Inflammation is an important risk factor for the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). Pelvic inflammatory diseases (PID) comprise a range of upper genital tract infection and inflammatory diseases. We aimed to evaluate the association between CRC and PID. From the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2005 in Taiwan, we obtained data for women 13-45 years of age diagnosed with PID. The PID patients were matched 1:4 to selected members of the population without PID based on age and the year of first entry. We use the Cox model with bootstrap approach for sensitive analysis to the estimated robust confidence intervals, while the correction of systematic error or uncertainty due to biases, and investigated whether over the PID increases the risk of developing CRC. The CRC hazard ratio during a follow-up period up to 5 years was 2.00 (95% CI, 1.30-3.08) for PID patients. Similarly, after adjusting for potential confounding factors, the adjusted CRC hazard ratio was 1.71 (95% CI, 1.10-2.65) for PID patients compared to patients in the comparison cohort. An association between PID and CRC was found in this study. Women with PID should be carefully evaluated for their risk of CRC.
