Author(s): Alyson Wilson*+

Keywords: Department of Defense ; Testing ; Design of Experiments ; Statistical Rigor
Abstract:

The Department of Defense Test and Evaluation (T&E) community plans, coordinates, and evaluates the testing of complex military systems. This testing is ripe for the application of statistical design and analysis techniques. However, as seen in the recent push by DOT&E to include design of experiments (DOE) in T&E, there are educational and expertise limitations in many T&E organizations that limit the application of advanced statistical methods. In this roundtable, we will discuss the benefits and challenges of increasing the use of statistical methods in T&E. Questions to ponder include: What are the potential gains of increased statistical rigor? How much statistical rigor is enough? What are the educational needs of the T&E work force to increase the use of statistics in T&E?
