Title: Development of a Course on Microsimulation of Health
Author(s): Philippe Fines*+ and Brendan T Smith
Companies: Statistics Canada and Institute for Work and Health/University of Toronto
Keywords: Microsimulation ; Epidemiology
Abstract:

Microsimulation is an underutilized tool in public health research for which few training opportunities exist in Canadian schools of public health. The objective was to create a graduate course on microsimulation in health research targeted to audiences from diverse backgrounds to help promote awareness of this innovative methodology. To develop this course we have drawn on the experiences in epidemiology, statistics and modeling of our research team. Students who complete the course will be able to interpret microsimulation papers and results, develop new models themselves, and be aware of the context and challenges facing researchers in this domain (e.g. validation and sensitivity analysis). Our methods included roundtables on different versions of the outline, knowledge acquisition on different forms of training and gathering of experiences and suggestions from professors and students. Our intermediate results included a workable definition of concepts to be included in the course and a series of webinars on specific topics. The proposed course will address the identified knowledge gap and introduce microsimulation to a new generation of public health researchers.
