Title: Steve's Contributions to Categorical Data Analysis and the Social Sciences
Author(s): Edo Airoldi*+
Companies: Harvard University
Keywords: log-linear models ; MLE
Abstract:

In his nearly fifty year-long career, Steve has contributed in fundamental ways to the advancement of the practice of statistics through his research, leadership and mentoring.

In this talk I will highlight Steve's unique blend of intellectual qualities and personality by recounting my own experience over the last ten years as Steve's student, collaborator and friend. I will describe some of some of his work on the geometry of categorical data analysis, mixed membership models, and statistical network analysis, which he pioneered, and highlight substantive scientific findings he unveiled with these tools. Along the way, I will describe him as a generous mentor to countless students and colleagues, an energetic leader and community builder, and an outstanding researcher.
