Author(s): Anil P. Gore*+
Companies: Cytel Statistical Software and Services Pvt. Ltd.
Keywords: statistics education ; south asia
Abstract:

Employment opportunities in statistics seem to be on the rise in South Asia. At the same time there is a shortage of suitably trained personnel. India, which has an illustrious history of contributions to methodological as well as applied statistics is no exception. What are the lacunae in the mainstream training facilities? What correction is needed? Is such correction possible? What role can International organizations play? My talk tries to make a case for a shift of emphasis from theory to work on live problems as the one change in education that can impact capacity building. Experts in the world at large can play a useful role as facilitators of interaction between academia and users of statistics.
