Abstract:

The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) includes a large amount of statistics content in the high school grades. Both Mathematics Education of Teachers Reports (MET 1 and 2) have identified statistics as an area of concern for teacher preparation. Because teachers are the vehicles through which statistical concepts are presented to students, to ensure the effective implementation of the CCSSM in the classroom, we need to provide high quality statistical preparation of teachers. We present teaching resources developed by the NSF-funded Project-SET, a project developing innovative curricular materials to help high school teachers foster students' statistical learning sampling variability and regression, two topics emphasized in the CCSSM. The resources include two learning progressions, a set of lesson plans, and three instructional videos illustrating how to carry out simulations in Tinkerplots, Excel, and the Nspire calculator. The resources are available for use by teacher preparation programs, school districts, and professional development programs wanting to increase teacher statistical knowledge.
