Title: Spatial Surveillance for Neglected Tropical Diseases

Abstract:

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) represent a class of diseases with pockets of high prevalence and severe local impact but receive little attention compared to well-known diseases with higher global prevalence such as malaria and cholera. The focality of disease incidence and prevalence complicates establishment of accurate surveillance to provide local and global health agencies accurate information for allocation of treatment and prevention resources. Based on collaborations with the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health in Ghana, we review data sources, known and suspected local risk factors, and analyze existing surveillance data to identify areas endemic, at risk, and currently free from Buruli ulcer. We provide a thorough assessment of the strengths and limitations of current data with respect to the identification of temporal and spatial variations in risk.
