Abstract:

The Future Mobility Survey(FMS) is a smartphone-based activity/travel survey developed at the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology, and currently being deployed as part of the Singapore's nationwide household travel survey. FMS gathers various sensor data via smartphones to detect activities and travel modes, which are then shown to the user in an online activity diary. The user is asked to validate the activities and modes by interacting with the online interface. Development for a planned 1000+ users has required careful attention to such issues as battery life, data analysis, user interface, and user burden. Many benefits have been realized from this approach, particularly the collection of a broader panel of data than typically obtained from traditional surveys, but it requires a steep learning curve from the user. The lack of interaction between surveyor and participant as the online diary is being filled out demands extensive work into providing videos, walk-through instructions, FAQs and support via email/phone. The experience of developing such a survey on a wide scale has provided many valuable lessons for the coming generation of smartphone travel surveys.
