Abstract:

Steve Fienberg's career sparkles from many facets, but among the most brilliant of them is his long-standing concern with Federal government statistics, and with surveys, and censuses more generally. He has studied and published books and papers the history of surveys and of censuses, explored the parallels between surveys and experiments, testified frequently before congress on issues about the Federal Statistical system, including census adjustment, chaired the Committee on National Statistics of the National Research Council and served on many of its Panels. Special intellectual concerns and contributions have been related to issues of privacy and confidentiality and to cognitive aspects of survey methodology.
