Abstract:

Multiple periodic surveys targeting the same population can be combined over time in many ways: from simple averages, linear regression, random walk, to population models. Hierarchical state-space models were used to describe both the repeated transect/route sampling designs and the "true" population process. We used two golden eagle surveys to show possible ways of compositing wildlife surveys and obtaining trend estimates. The Breeding Bird Survey (1970-2010) and the West Inc. Golden Eagle Survey (2006-2010) were used to develop composite time series at the population level. West Inc. used a multiple observer line transect survey to get population estimates of adult and juvenile bald eagles in Western U.S. Bird Conservations Regions (09, 10, 16, and 17). The Breeding Bird Survey identified birds along roadside routes to obtain a long-term, multiple species index of breeding birds. Uncertain identification of age class will also be discussed.
