Abstract:

Standard nonparametric tests are fairly common in clinical practice, for example the Wilcoxon rank-sum. These approaches, however, do not allow for the adjustment of covariates. Aligned rank tests allow the analyst to first adjust for baseline demographics or other patient characteristics prior to application of the Wilcoxon or a similar test based on ranks.

In this presentation we illustrated the use of aligned rank tests on a large clinical dataset. We use this dataset as a basis for a Monte Carlo simulation which demonstrates the increase in power over standard parametric approaches when the assumption of normality is not met.
