Abstract:

The current secondary school curriculum in mathematics is inadequate to prepare students for the challenges in today's data-driven society. Every student needs tools to evaluate data and assess the quality of information presented. Mathematical reasoning focuses on finding a deterministic answer to a specific question; however, our students need to grapple with the variability that exists in data and create meaningful answers in the presence of that variability. This session proposes significant modifications to existing mathematics curriculum putting topics in data analysis and probability on equal footing with algebra, geometry and pre-calculus. Starting with the NCTM standards and the GAISE report as a framework, this proposal draws on numerous interviews with alums, parents, college faculty and peer schools to determine the most appropriate content and pedagogical approach for integrating these topics into the mathematics curriculum.
