Abstract:
|
Like any other science, statistics has its own set of vocabulary words. In order to understand key concepts in introductory statistics, students need a working knowledge of the important vocabulary words related to these concepts. In other fields, the use of personal glossaries has been shown to be an effective tool to aid in vocabulary acquisition. In this poster, we will describe vocabulary activities designed around student's use of personal glossaries. We will then report on an experimental study testing the effectiveness of these personal glossaries for vocabulary acquisition and on student understanding of key related concepts (correlation, regression, sampling, experiments) in introductory statistics.
