Abstract:
|
What does it take for a tennis player to advance in a tournament? Does winning depend on passing shots and aces or on consistency and a solid second serve? This paper takes a graphical approach towards investigating the statistics necessary for a player to advance to the final round. Using html scraping, we obtained match data from the websites of the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. We then tracked variables including number of aces, winners, double faults, and break points won to look for similarities amongst those players who advanced into further rounds of the tournaments. Results from the three tournaments were then compared to investigate overarching patterns.
