Abstract:
|
We propose various measures of game competitiveness in sports which are based on team box score data and provide a specific application to college football results over the past few seasons. The measures discussed are bounded between 0.5 and 1.0: scores closer to the lower bound are associated with a highly competitive match, and scores closer to the upper bound indicate a dominating performance by the winning team. We also investigate the use of game competitive measures in a team ranking system currently employed by the Bowl Championship Series (BCS).
