Abstract:

APL, R and S-plus have been available for many years. These computer languages use Von Neumann style, which consists of performing computations using step-by-step instructions., requiring programming controls such as do loops, and branches. Backus (1978) presented a vision for functional programming for applied languages. If functional programming language were available, new innovative formulae can be easily programmed. High level language will enable direct translation of programs to parallel computing on multi-processor systems. What are the basic functions needed for Statistical computing? How can we easily combine to build useful programs? Is it feasible to add such features to any of the existing language?
