Abstract:
|
In recent years the citizens of one city in Southern California passed a bond measure that allocated funds to improve open spaces for recreation. In particular the bond was intended to improve more than 300 parks. We planned a study to assess the effect of such improvements on park use, physical activity and park safety perceptions. We selected 10 urban parks: 5 slated to undergo a major improvement during the study period and 5 parks acted as controls. The parks were extensively observed before and after the improvements took place. In particular, we surveyed park users and residents within one mile radius from each park before and after the improvements took place . We present an interesting use of propensity score methods to estimate the effect of park improvements on self-reported park use, physical activity and park safety perceptions.
