Abstract:

Cleveland and Mc Gill tested in 1984 how well our visual system is adapted at performing particular tasks, such as comparing positions along a common line. Kosara and Ziemkiwicz recently (2010) re-produced this work with studies using crowd-sourcing and came to the same conclusions. Based on this work, we investigate how we - visually - break ties between competing visual elements (and their aesthetics). Using graphical inference techniques (Buja et al., 2009) we can measure the impact that e.g. outliers or color choices have visually (in the general population).
