Abstract:

We've been using simulation methods (bootstrapping and randomization) to introduce inference (intervals and tests), in an effort to better develop conceptual understanding of the fundamental concepts of inference. Once students have gained an understanding of inference using simulation methods, we then cover the traditional distribution-based formulaic methods. Duke has been one of several schools using the Lock5 textbook and online applets. This talk will focus on the motivation behind the approach, details regarding the implementation, and student reactions.
