Abstract:

Normally when researchers consider extra-dispersed count data, they are thinking of extra-dispersion that may be found in Poisson models. The far majority of Poisson extra-dispersed models are in fact over-dispersed models. A number of methods have been designed to identify and adjust for Poisson overdispersion. However, NB2 negative binomial models may also be extra-dispersed, but they are in general as likely to be under-dispersed as over-dispersed. This paper looks at the sources of negative binomial extra-dispersion, and provides guidelines on the type of models that can be used to adjust for it.
