Abstract:

Playing Games with a Purpose is an NSF project to develop interactive Web-based games and corresponding investigative laboratory modules that effectively teach statistical thinking and the process of scientific inquiry to undergraduate students. The first of these game-based labs uses an online version of the ancient Chinese puzzle game Tangrams. Data generated from playing the game is instantly available on the web for analysis. The lab leads students through the investigation of a specific research question and culminates with the student developing their own research question, designing the experiment, and choosing an appropriate statistical procedure. The Tangrams game and labs have been used in numerous classrooms over the last two semesters at the United States Military Academy and Grinnell College to reinforce concepts related to research design and hypothesis testing.
