Abstract:
|
One important topic for assessing players in any sport is how they perform as they age. In this paper we look at the performance of National Hockey League (NHL) goalies over time. Considering the performance of every goalie that has appeared in the NHL since 1980, we will focus on a goalies save percentage is affected by their aging. To account for selection bias that occurs after about age 28 -- a large percentage of goalies who start in the NHL prior to age 28 do not play past that age -- we focus on the change in adjusted save percentage rather than average save percentage over time. We normalize save percentages to account for changing rules and styles of play over the period of study.
