Abstract:

A hypothesis test is presented for testing whether the difference in the location parameters for two normal populations is the same as the difference in their scale parameters. In an experiment that allows for treatment responses to differ both respect to their means and standard deviations, one may want to determine whether the treatment effect is due more to the change in their means or due more to the change in their standard deviations. A test statistic is proposed and critical values determined for a variety sample sizes. A systematic investigation of type I error rates and powers for proposed test is conducted using a parameterization scheme that describes the difference in the populations in terms of a 'distance' parameter and an 'orientation' parameter.
