Abstract:
|
The April 2012 Math Awareness Month theme was Mathematics, Statistics, and the Data Deluge. With today's technology massive amounts are now available. "Big Data" comes from our social networking activities, on-line searches, and financial transactions. It is also present in the scientific community, e.g., genetic sequences and astronomical transmissions. Very few introductory applied statistics courses consider these immense sets of data, for which many standard descriptive and inferential methods fail. This roundtable will discuss if such data should be covered in Stat 101 and, if it should, how it can be incorporated.
