Abstract:
|
This panel takes on the L-word: Lecturing, its potentially damaging effects in the Statistics classroom, and strategies for minimizing its use. Panelists will discuss a wide range of reasons for shifting classroom speech away from the instructor, will share successful techniques for doing so--particularly techniques that increase student "voice" in the classroom while scaling back the voice of the teacher. Panelists will also offer evidence of improved learning as a result. Panelists teach in diverse settings, so that audience members should have the opportunity to draw lessons applicable to their home institutions. There should also be ample time during the session to hear from audience members as well as participants.
