Abstract:
|
Gene expressions (Log-transformed) typically are assumed to come from a mixture of two Gaussian distributions, with means zero and nonzero (cf. Efron, p.18, (2.11)), or sometimes three means (zero, negative = under-expressed, positive = over-expressed). The "empirical null" can be estimated via "central matching" (cf. Efron, p.99). Alternatively, we propose a method based on the conventional QQ plot. We illustrate the inferences using FDR and local FDR on data from a microarray experiment involving beetles of 16 types. The results indicate genes responsive to tissues, gender, nutrition status, and combinations of factors.
