Abstract:

We present a technique for estimating the proportion of cells in a mixed sample of cells for instance, a sample containing some cancerous cells and some normal cells using gene expression data. The idea is to find an optimal transformation of the data so that a modified ratio will be consistent for the proportion. This estimate can be used to identify the under- and over-expression of genes in cell types of interest. We verify the accuracy of our technique in several examples and present theory giving conditions under which the technique works more generally.
