Abstract:

I first met Peter A.W. Lewis in the late 1950s or early 1960s when he was at IBM Yorktown. He impressed me as an upbeat, intelligent, energetic and creative spirit who stimulated others. Our mutual interests in stochastic reliability and service system problems arising in computer systems nourished our long personal friendship and professional association. Peter remonstrated with me when, in 1970, I left Carnegie Mellon for the OR Department. at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS; but within a year he asked me to pave the way for a job at NPS. He came, and prospered and bloomed at NPS; he attracted and worked with several strong associates, some of whom are here on this session. It was through Peter that I met Sir David Cox, an acquaintanceship that has always been rewarding and pleasant. I am also grateful for Peter for introducing the NPS OR Dept., and me to our session chairwoman, Pat Jacobs. Colleagues like Pat are scarce as hen's teeth!
